Fall offers a fun fashion opportunity to change up one’s style, but the cooler weather can sometimes pose a challenge to students used to wearing minimal layers. Fortunately, this year’s fall trends are perfect for the cooler weather, with an emphasis on stylized outerwear and accessorizing to the max. Overall, this season’s trends combine classic styles and elevated silhouettes, inspired by the refined glamor of the 1950s and 1960s, with statement pieces creating a bold combination that veers away from the quiet luxury trend that has been popular in past seasons, writes Who What Wear Magazine.
Outerwear
To stay warm as temperatures drop, consider these outerwear options to remain trendy. First are suede jackets, which have been seen everywhere this fall, including on Miu Miu and Gucci’s runways, writes Elle Magazine. But the brand that has truly made suede the it material this season is Prada, whose popularity–which has increased 35% in the last three months–follows that of brown suede–which has increased 250% this month alone, reports Data But Make It Fashion on Instagram. While traditional black leather jackets are always trending, top fashion brands have been experimenting with the material more and more, and it is translating into the everyday wear of fashion icons like Hailey Beiber and Bella Hadid, reports Who What Wear Magazine. Furthermore, the runways of high fashion labels Proenza Schouler, Tod’s, and Bottega Veneta featured flowy, draped leather pieces that push the boundaries of the current stylization of the fabric. At Indian Hills, students aren’t often seen wearing such bold looks daily, but one could begin to incorporate the new leather trends through suede and leather jackets and bags, possibly in colors other than black, for more exciting options.
Other jackets that often appeared in the Fall and Winter 2024 collections include funnel necks, scarf coats, capes, and fur. The funnel neck, a fancy fashion term for a high neck, appeared mostly on jackets, for example, Burberry’s heavy canvas trench coats, as reported by Who What Wear Magazine, but also in an increase in popularity of the turtleneck, which was seen in collections by Prada, Bottega Veneta, Dries Van Noten, and Proenza Schouler. This trend will most likely trickle down to everyday wear in the form of turtleneck sweaters, a cozy yet fashionable way to keep warm this fall and winter. Additionally, funnel necks in any form can be easily layered, if needed, with other outerwear to add another layer of warmth and style to any outfit. The scarf coat is a bold jacket that was seen everywhere this fashion month, from Bottega Veneta to Victoria Beckham, reports Who What Wear Magazine. The poncho-like piece features a sweeping neckline and fabric that wraps around the body to create an unusually stylish silhouette. While this trend may not seem like the style of a typical Hills student, who knows? If Kendall Jenner can wear it, why can’t we?
Similarly, capes have been surprisingly trending the season featured on outerwear on the runways of big brands like Chloé and Proenza Schouler, reports Who What Wear Magazine. While capes can be difficult to style, they bring a sense of elegance to outerwear that is very in this season, especially if worn in neutral colors or a dramatic black. Suede or leather capes could be another way to level up your wardrobe this season, adding another level of sophistication to any outfit, in any weather.
Accessories
All kinds of accessories are in this season, with fashion brands adopting a more-is-more attitude that levels up any outfit. In general, any form of accessory improves an outfit, but here are the accessories that are especially trendy this season. Starting off stylish, hats have seen an increase in popularity following features on the Altuzarra, Fforme, Prada, and Saint Laurent runways, writes Who What Wear. One specific style that both follows the elegant styles and warm wear trending this season is pillbox hats. Defined by Merriam-Webster as small round hats with straight sides and no brim, their iconic look is attributed to former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the early 1960s, writes Cosmopolitan Magazine. Additionally, newsboy caps–seen on the Chanel, Anna Sui, Prada, and Celine runways–and beanies are two other hats that are trending this fall, writes Cosmopolitan and Who What Wear, which are both sensible and stylish.
Similarly, Who What Wear Magazine has reported an increase in the popularity of gloves this season, especially elegantly influenced opera gloves, that improve an outfit and can keep individuals warm. According to Who What Wear Magazine, key labels that feature gloves on their runways include Carven, Ferragamo, Khaite, and Miu Miu.
Furthermore, Indian Hills students can level up their levels with other trending accessories including oversized glasses and eye-catching belts, reports Who What Wear Magazine, in addition to the always-popular earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces. To maximize the style and trendiness of an outfit, the more eye-catching accessories the better, a large contrast to recent quiet luxury trends of past seasons.
Color Palette
While trying out new styles can be an exciting way to usher in the new season, it’s not for everyone. Instead, Hills students can experiment with new trending colors. As always during the fall, brown, navy, and black are still trending, with 100% of Valentino’s Fall 2024 collection featuring black monochrome looks, reports Data But Make It Fashion on Instagram. This year though, burgundy is everywhere, a deeper version of the bright red that was all the rage last fall, writes Who What Wear Magazine. According to In Style Magazine, this look was featured on the runways of the most iconic brands including Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Ferragamo. Additionally, In Style Magazine has reported that medium to earthy dark green tones are trending this season. On the runways, Chloé featured dark green coats, and Bottega Veneta displayed olive-leaning handbags and skirts. Additionally, according to Vogue, Burberry, Ferragamo, and Gucci’s fall collections, all featured head-to-toe khaki looks, leading to Pantone reporting “Iguana” as a trending color following London Fashion Week. Lastly, cool muted pinks are a popular contrast to the dark and earthy tones trending the season. Vogue reports that pink was seen on the fall runways of Chloé, Prada, and Chanel worn “head-to-toe, with a dress or tailored suit, or as a pop of color among neutrals.” Fortunately for Hills students, the large amount of neutral colors currently trending makes for easy styling. Most students should already have the basic blacks, browns, etc. in their closets, making it only a matter of finding fun statement pieces to take each outfit to the next level.
This fall season provides exciting opportunities for students of Indian Hills to step out of their comfort zones and embrace bold outerwear and diverse accessories to elevate their outfits. With influences from the glamorous styles of the past and the fearless experimentation of the present, every outfit can be great. Whether that means a statement suede jacket, a chic scarf coat, an elegant cape, or layers of accessories, the fashion this season is all about self-expression and staying warm!
