Indian Hills senior swimmer, Katie Lawrence, broke the Bergen County record for most gold medals won by an individual at the Bergen County Meet of Champions with a total of 8 medals. In a 4 year high school career there can be a maximum of 8 individual gold medals obtained in swimming, so getting 8 of 8 gold medals is a remarkable achievement. Lawrence explains how “ultimately, the goal was those eight county titles because no girl had ever done that before.

The max amount of individual events that you are allowed to swim is eight, and with the previous record being seven, I knew I had to beat it. The cool thing is, my record can never be broken, only matched.” Along with this achievement, Lawrence also secured the county record for the 100 freestyle in 51.08 seconds, beating the previous record of 51.35 held by Lawrence’s old friend from Ridgewood, Isabel Lee.

Lawrence adds how “it didn’t really feel all that different because of the record that I broke, but in the sense that it was my last county race ever.” Lawrence was just short of adding another achievement in her career when she was 0.06 seconds short of the county record for the 50. Katie Lawrence has had a wonderful career and some remarkable accomplishments to back up her name. Lawrence reminisces how “it was a bittersweet moment, and I’m glad I ended off on a high note.”
