Indian Hills offers a variety of clubs that allow students to get involved and join a club that sparks their interests. Art Club and Inscape are just two of the many clubs at Indian Hills that drive future artists. Debate Club and Model UN inspire future advocates. DECA and the Stock Market Club build future business students. Since Indian Hills offers so many opportunities for success with various clubs, many students miss some hidden gems. One of these is Model UN.
IHHS Model UN is a club that has been around for years. Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations and focuses on building public speaking and problem-solving skills. IHHS Model UN attended AMUN, a Model UN conference at Bergen Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey, and FLOWMUN, a conference started this year with Ramapo and Indian Hills running the entire conference. Each Model UN conference has different committees with varying topics, but at AMUN, some of these committees included the African Union (this year focusing on migrant smuggling) and the World Health Organization (focused on reforming the global pharmaceutical industry at this past conference). Each committee features one to two topics that change for each conference. Students debate these topics and develop solutions to align with their given country. Ms. Wiener, the MUN club advisor says, “Each Model UN event brings opportunities to shine and win awards.
Model UN involves real-world problems and helps students tremendously in the real world. Ms. Wiener shares why students should join Model UN: “One reason to join is that Model UN members are a supportive and helpful group. We all work together toward learning how to MUN and to prepare for our events. Our leadership wants nothing more than for the club to grow and be able to do more and more!” Model UN allows students to not only solve problems but also meet new people from all around the tri-state area. Freshman Model UN member, Julia Coppo shares why she joined MUN: “I joined MUN in sixth grade because I thought it would be really cool to talk to people from around the world. Then I started to do it and I realized how much I loved to collaborate in committees and I realized how valuable the skills that MUN taught me were for me in other aspects of my life.”
The Environmental Club is another unique club offered at Hills. Club President Gabriella Romm states, “The Environmental Club is a place where Indian Hills students can come and discuss environmental issues, solutions, and community involvement.” The main event of the year is the annual Earth Day festival, which raises awareness for the planet and inspires students to take action in their daily lives, which helps change the world.
The club also describes environmental issues such as global warming, climate change, natural disasters, pollution, and resource depletion. Gabriella Romm encourages “any Indian Hills student interested in the environment or sustainability to come to a meeting and hear what we’re all about. We hope to create a strong community of students working towards a brighter and greener future!”
Indian Hills offers a variety of clubs and activities for all interested students. From art to business, Indian Hills has it all. Model UN and the Environmental Club are just two clubs at Indian Hills that encourage both leadership and collaboration.
