Each year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd where over a billion people all around the world celebrate the Earth, and take part in activities to make the world a better place. At Indian Hills, the Environmental Club hosted its annual Earth Day Festival. The club organized informational and fun activities such as trivia, a basketball recycling game, fishing out plastic, planting, and spikeball.
When asked about the planning process club president Gabriella Romm stated, “We began planning a few months before the festival, brainstorming and coming up with ideas for activities. For the next few weeks, we met periodically to prepare materials and figure out the details of the event. The planning and the event went pretty well. I am proud of how everything turned out, proud of our planning and hard work, and the student turnout.”
The Earth Day Festival featured collaboration between clubs with Interact and Love Letters setting up their own activities as well including rock painting and friendship bracelets. The Environmental Club also collected solar eclipse glasses for recycling through Astronomers Without Borders. Romm stated, “Unfortunately, it was raining that day so we were unable to have the festival outside but I would say we accomplished our goal of spreading environmental awareness through informational and fun activities.” The Earth Day Festival took place alongside the Guidance Department, in the hallway leading to the auditorium. The event had many student and staff attendees during the lunch periods, making the event successful in bringing awareness to the IH’s community environmental efforts.
