The Indian Hills Girls Golf team had a tremendously successful season with a record of 7-5 and ranked 8th in the Big North Division. The girls played an average of 3 matches per week at golf courses all over the tri-state area, including Paramus, Orchard Hills, and Darlington. Mrs. Michels, the girl’s golf coach says, “Through it all, what impresses me most about this team is their ability to work together and never quit. Golf is a game where you are going to have good holes and bad holes. The way the girls recovered from bad holes is what propelled them this season. They never quit, they just kept going and improving match after match, hole after hole.” The girls commonly played against schools including PCTI, Wayne Valley, and Old Tappan.
Juniors Gaby Becker, Sam Marker, Kate Giletta, and Claire Giletta broke school records with a new low of 9 and a record of 172, breaking the record by 4 strokes. Becker and Kate Giletta each scored 40, Claire Giletta scored 42, and Marker scored 50. Marker says, “I think I can speak on behalf of the whole team when I say we are simply really proud of ourselves for not only breaking but crushing the school record! We have worked so hard all season through all the crazy weather and tough matches to reach this point, and the support from our coaches and fellow teammates made it possible.”
Becker showed her skills once again when breaking the school record for the best 9-hole average and scored an average of 42.4, breaking the old record of 43.3. Becker says, “I was very excited to break the school record this year. After not having the results I wanted last year, I practiced a lot over the summer and was happy to see the hard work paid off. I look forward to my senior season and my goal is to leave a lasting legacy on the Girls Varsity Golf Team and have another record-breaking season!”
The girls not only had a successful season but created fun and memorable experiences along the way. Kate Giletta shares her favorite memory from the season: “My favorite memory of the golf season was our last match of the year. It was senior night and we were playing against PCTI. Not only did we win, but we were able to beat the school record, the nine-hole round of 176 (which we set last year) down to 172. I was so happy that our team was able to break another record and as one of the captains, I was very proud of everyone for persevering and contributing to our success throughout the season.”
Reflecting on the season, Mrs. Michels says, “The girls had an outstanding season and I am so proud of them. They are terrific golfers and more importantly, they are terrific people. It is such a pleasure to coach this group of golfers.”
