On September 21st, 2024, Indian Hills students, staff, and the Oakland Recreational community celebrated Indian Hills High School’s sixtieth anniversary. The day-long celebration featured food vendors, activities, and events for all ages.
A conglomeration of organizations, clubs, and members of the Oakland community turned something that began as an idea into a spectacular reality. According to Mr. Duncan, the head of the sports department at Indian Hills, “What started as a high school football game with fireworks turned into Oakland recreation getting involved, the townspeople coming together, and the Interact club all helping to bring the FLOW [community] together–as people heard about it it started to grow.” The action-packed day was a product of hard work, community, and yearlong planning. Not only was it a celebration of Indian Hill’s birthday, but also, a celebration of the resulting growth and connectivity the school has brought to the Oakland community over the past sixty years.
At 7:00 in the evening, almost the entire Indian Hills student body attended the Indian Hill’s football game versus Fort Lee. The cheers from the student section could be heard for miles, and according to Abigail Collins, a sophomore who attended the game with her friends, “It was so much fun! Everything was so well organized and put together. It was amazing to see the community come together to celebrate how amazing this school is!” Despite defeat, the Braves played valiantly and the community showered them and their efforts with support.
Prior to the Indian Hills vs. Fort Lee game, Oakland Recreational Football organized their regular season games, against the Wyckoff recreational team, to be played at Hank Bogio field. This brought more people from throughout the FLOW community to celebrate the day!
Mr. Duncan beamed at the memory, “I was on campus all day and was able to experience it all–it was just so great watching this place be alive with the amount of people that came through throughout the day–we’re talking thousands–it was absolutely spectacular!” Overall, Indian Hills 60th anniversary celebration was an inspiring day of community fun.
