Take a look around the cafeteria, and you’ll see plenty of students playing on their phones (myself included). If you don’t notice it, it is likely because you are playing a game yourself. Lately, some familiar titles have been making an unexpected comeback and gaining popularity in the past few months. To see if students are intentionally playing the same games or if it’s just a coincidence, Drumbeats conducted a survey at Indian Hills. The results revealed some interesting—and likely foreseeable—trends.
Looking at the graph, we found that approximately 35% of people at Hills would call Brawl Stars their favorite game. This isn’t surprising, given that the game saw a massive resurgence after hitting one of its lowest player counts in December 2023—under 1,000,000 players—before skyrocketing to about 4,500,000. But why are so many students playing Brawl Stars? The sophomore “Turbo” justifies this rise, stating that Brawl Stars is a “great way for us to get together and play.” The game’s easy accessibility and multiplayer aspect seem to be key reasons why it’s so popular at school.
In second place was Block Blast, with around 25% of students calling it their “favorite game to play right now.” This likely comes as no surprise, as it’s commonly seen being played in nearly every period. Many students have had that moment of reaching a new all-time high score and calling their friends over for help, leading to intense board analysis for the most optimal placement.
With the two clear champions of this survey out of the way, we can move on to the less, but certainly not least, voted games. Clash Royale and Clash of Clans tied for 10%. Junior Nick Carreira and Sophomore Ben Welsh shared similar sentiments, each saying how they “just love Clash of Clans.” Nate Fadini, a Clash Royale fan, simply stated, “Mortar.” Despite the games Clash Royale and Clash of Clans being in the lower percentile, it is undeniably still a student favorite.
One particularly interesting takeaway is that 55% of students voted for games made by Supercell. Does this make Supercell the most popular mobile game developer among Indian Hills students? Whether it’s the appealing art style, engaging gameplay, or unique advertising, Supercell’s games have certainly made their way onto the phones of many Indian Hills students.
were spread across other games, including Dragon Ball Legends, Subway Surfers, and Balatro. So the next time you queue up a match in Brawl Stars or Clash Royale, you might just be playing against someone sitting in the next room over.
