This year marks the end of an era as the high school community says goodbye to one of its most beloved figures: Coach Bru. Since 1998, Coach Bru has been teaching here at Indian Hills, but previously taught at Paramus for 3 years. After 28 and a half years of service as a gym teacher and coach, Coach Bru has retired. Coach Bru served as our head football coach from 1998 to 2009, winning 60 games. He later served as an assistant coach for the bowling team for 3 years, from 2021 to 2024. Last year, he became an assistant coach for girls’ basketball and will continue to assist them next year at Indian Hills.
To generations of students, Coach Bru has been more than just a teacher; he has been a constant presence, someone who showed up every day with energy, humor, and a genuine interest in the people standing before him. Whether it was the first thing in the morning or the last block of the day, Coach Bru brought the same enthusiasm. One of the things Coach Bru is most known for is his sense of humor. His jokes, sometimes perfectly timed, sometimes hilariously questionable, have become part of school legend. A regular class period could easily turn into a moment students would laugh about for years. Yet beneath the humor was intention. Coach Bru knew how to break tension, build confidence, and make even the most reluctant student feel comfortable participating. For many, gym class wasn’t just a requirement; it was the highlight of the day.
As a coach, Coach Bru exemplified what it means to lead. He taught students how to win with humility and lose with resilience. He emphasized teamwork, discipline, and effort, reminding his athletes that success isn’t just measured on a scoreboard. His lessons often extended beyond sports, shaping how students approached challenges in school and in life. Coach Bru explained “I was blown away by all of the well wishes. Coach Hill organized a dinner for me and we had probably 25 former players there. We sat there for 90 minutes after everybody else left and just reminisced. Great memories. Indian Hills has been an amazing place to work.” Many alumni still credit Coach Bru for teaching them the value of hard work, perseverance, and showing up for others.
What truly sets Coach Bru apart, though, is how deeply he cares about his students. He has always gone out of his way to offer encouragement, or simply make them laugh on a tough day. He remembered names, stories, and small details that made students feel seen. For countless teenagers navigating stressful years, Coach Bru was a steady and reassuring presence.
As he steps into retirement, the impact of Coach Bru’s career is clear in the stories shared by students, athletes, colleagues, and alumni. Coach Hill explains, “He has been an amazing person to work with. Our department changed for the better the day he arrived and it was all an improvement. He’s become like a brother to me. There’s a huge void here at IH every day. His influence lives on in the confidence he helped build, the friendships he helped foster, and the countless laughs that echoed through the gym over the years.”
While the school will certainly miss his voice, his jokes, and his leadership, Coach Bru leaves knowing he made a difference. Congratulations, Coach Bru, on a well-earned retirement. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the laughter. You will always be a part of this school’s story.
