As the fall sports season comes to a close, students may be looking for a job, whether that be part-time or full-time. Luckily, the FLOW area offers many opportunities for teens to find employment in various fields. Not only is it fun to have some pocket money during the colder months, but beginning a job young teaches responsibility and discipline, skills that can be applied when doing schoolwork at Indian Hills.
Students in search of a lower-commitment job that would still allow them to play winter sports should consider applying to work at Campgaw Mountain, which is just outside the FLOW area in Mahwah. This year, Campgaw is holding job fairs from October 20th to December 7th, providing a great opportunity for Hills students to check out what a seasonal job would look like for them. For those looking to get a taste of the hospitality or food industries, the FLOW area is famous for its array of pizza places. In Oakland, Cucina 347 has applications open on their website and in-store for a variety of positions. In Franklin Lakes, Pazza is hiring bussers, hosts, and runners. Small, yet popular Cafe Amici in Wyckoff is not hiring this season, nor is Playa Bowls in Franklin Lakes, but employees say there might be more positions for hire in the spring. To find openings at jobs like these, it is important to look regularly at their websites and offerings.
Market Basket in Franklin Lakes is also hiring, with reportedly flexible hours, as is Stop & Shop in the same town. Additionally, ACE Hardware in Oakland is looking for employees aged 16 and up.
The FLOW area has so many opportunities to offer, and these are just a few of them. Though getting a job can be out of one’s comfort zone, Indian Hills students should truly consider applying to some of these positions to gain a well-rounded high school experience. However, it is important to consider balance; if you’re taking a heavier course load this year, then wait to find a job until you feel confident in your academics.
These locations know that the majority of their employees are teenagers looking to figure out their first jobs and make a little money, so flexibility and confidence are key traits when becoming situated in a job. Whether you’re saving for something as monumental as a car, or something as small as a Starbucks drink here and there, applying for one of these jobs will ensure students a little extra money during the colder and longer months of the year.
