On Saturday, January 31st, the Indian Hills Academic Decathlon (ACDEC) team competed in the Regional II Competition and made amazing strides. The team placed Second Overall, meaning they advanced to the State finals. Led by Mr. Paravati, the team competes against other schools in different topics each year: this year was the Roaring 20s. The team studied the history, literature, art, music, and economics of the decade, and then took exams against other schools. Whichever team has the higher overall score wins; the competition is made up of various different challenges, including writing essays, mock interviews, and impromptu speeches.
Competing on the Regular Team and winning first place in the Super Quiz event was Alexander Noerr (Captain and MVP), Matthew Khanlian, Daphne Bergel, Zachary Brothers, Ryleigh Burchell, Mark Havel, Paul Vitolo, Angelina Dominguez, and Noah Becker. Many others excelled as well, bringing in the wins for the team.
Overall, the team advanced with flying colors, with Mr. Paravati saying, “The team has been in a great place this year. We have a lot of veteran players who have been with us since they were freshmen or sophomores. The competition on Saturday allowed many of them to shine.” New members Junior Angelina Dominguez and Junior Noah Becker both had fantastic showings, as well as Junior Daphne Bergel, who had the highest score with a prepared speech throughout the competition.
ACDEC will take on the State Finals on February 28th, and we have no doubt they’ll outshine the competition. Teamwork and leadership created a strong and unique team, and they’re sure to go far this year. Congratulations to everyone who competed!
