On Thursday, February 5th and Friday February 6th, the Indian Hills Model United Nations Team traveled to Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, NJ to compete at the annual Academy Model United Nations (AMUN) conference. Prior to this, delegates conducted in-depth research and analysis of their countries positions on certain issues and topics in specific United Nations committees, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), and in a Joint Crisis Committee (JCC), which is a fast-paced environment where delegates must work together with limited resources to form solutions. Delegates attended mock conferences, practicing impromptu speech performance and parliamentary procedure, and wrote position papers in preparation for the conference.
Over the course of two days, these delegates took on vigorous debate, dominated complex negotiations, and engaged in comprehensive resolution-writing. In the end, this hard work paid off as the Indian Hills team won overall Outstanding Small Delegation, and several delegates won individual awards:
- Maddie Kincel gained a Verbal Commendation representing Mexico in WHO
- Abigail Chon earned an Honorable Mention representing Venezuela in ECOFIN
- Andrew Fox was named Outstanding Delegate in the JCC representing the Ferrari Legal Team
- Julia Coppo was named Best Delegate representing the USA in the UN Security Council
After all their hard work this Model UN season, some participants have chosen to share the great experiences they’ve had this year:
“I loved AMUN this year. It was a great experience because I was able to catch up with friends from other schools and put my Model UN skills to the test. Model UN is such a fun club since it gives me the opportunity to develop my public speaking abilities and strengthen my knowledge of policy.” – Jacob Lee, Junior, delegate in the UN Security Council committee
“AMUN this year was an amazing experience and I got to meet so many new people. Being in a crisis committee was overwhelming at first but by the second day it became much easier to manage. The experience I got at AMUN will help me solve problems efficiently for the rest of my life.” – Andrew Fox, Sophomore, delegate in the JCC Committee
