This past June, roughly 3.9 million high school seniors graduated. Why the large number? This is because of the time of the baby boom. When the children who were born in the year 2007 entered elementary school, the schools had to hire more teachers to manage the teacher-student ratio.
Despite the setbacks due to the Covid-19 Pandemic from 2020 to 2024, most seniors had adapted to the strange learning environment and persevered until the end. However, according to a poll, only 35% of United States seniors were considered “proficient” in reading and writing, while even fewer were “proficient” in mathematics. This is due to the pandemic, as most middle school and high schoolers lost somewhat of their education. But most did very well during the pandemic despite being isolated on a computer screen for eight or nine hours a day.
Overall, this is a huge accomplishment for the Class of 2025, and they’re being put into the history books. The valedictorian for the Class of 2025 at Indian Hills had a few words to say regarding the historical graduation class. Former class of 2025 senior, Jia Chen, stated, “It’s crazy about how many kids were graduating in one year and even crazier to think about how so many of us were all applying to colleges at the same time. I think it definitely made the college application process more competitive, so it’s impressive to see how all of us are now trying to reach our goals in college.” In conclusion, could the Class of 2026 surpass the Class of 2025 in graduation numbers? Only time can tell.
