On Thursday, January 15, 2026, 19 students were inducted into the World Language National Honors Society (WLNHS). These 19 students have demonstrated exceptional effort throughout their four year language journey. Whether they’ve studied Spanish, Italian, or French, these students have excelled in learning their respective languages.
To begin the ceremony, the three current WLNHS officers, seniors Ava Blanke (Italian), Sean Delaney (Spanish), and Demi Walker (Spanish), were introduced by Advisor Señora Brown and spoke about this special group’s last four years of language. Señora Brown comments, “We World Language teachers are very proud of the dedication and hard work the inductees have put into their language studies.”
Students taking Spanish were introduced first, where nine students were inducted into the Spanish National Honors Society. Spanish sponsor, Mrs. Brown, gave the oath in Spanish as the inductees were prompted to repeat. Officer Demi Walker comments on her past four years of Spanish, “Spanish has changed my life a lot, I can speak it pretty good. I’ve studied abroad in Spain and have friends and people I consider family there. I use my Spanish a lot in my daily life, so I’m very grateful for it.”
Next, eight students were inducted into the Italian National Honors Society. Italian sponsor, Mrs. Lazzara, gave the oath in Italian as the inductees were prompted to repeat. Officer Ava Blanke comments, “The last four years of taking Italian has made a difference in my life because not only has it allowed me to connect to my family and friends from Italy, but I was also able to better understand an entirely different culture and traditions. This is why studying a language is so important, so that we can be subject to a different world of possibilities and be open to learning a variety of different customs.”
Finally, the two remaining students were inducted into the French National Honors Society. French sponsor, Mrs. Deming, gave the oath in French as the inductees were prompted to repeat. One of the two French inductees, senior Sophia Cook comments, “One of the main issues I had throughout my French class was that our class was relatively quiet. Nobody wanted to speak up, even though conversation is important in learning a language. I wasn’t close with anyone in my class either, which led to limited interaction with people in my class. After a few years of growing more comfortable in my class, I opened myself up to talking more in class. I felt I got much farther in learning French.” Each group of students stated a poem and repeated an oath in their respective language.
As the candles were lit – and shortly after blown out by the inductees – the night concluded after a successful ceremony. The inductees have worked so hard to get to where they are now: new members of the World Language National Honors Society. All the involved teachers hope that they will continue to learn more about their additional language in the future.
